Recurring conflict

When the same intelligent argument keeps ending in the same distance

You can both describe the pattern. That does not mean either of you can see it clearly while it is happening.

On this pageSpeak to couples who already understand the argument intellectually and need help changing it together.

Recurring conflict is usually organized around protection, not a lack of communication skills. One partner may press for clarity because distance feels dangerous; the other may retreat because intensity feels impossible to navigate. The content changes, but the sequence remains. In session, we pay attention to the moment the conversation stops being contact and becomes defense. I interrupt the sequence, help each of you say what the protection is covering, and ask you to practice a different exchange while we can still study what happens.

Is this you?

  • You communicate effectively elsewhere but become circular, rigid, or silent with each other.

  • Each of you can make a persuasive case, and neither feels understood.

  • You want a therapist who will work actively with the interaction instead of only discussing it afterward.
